Ready to build your perfect beginner’s makeup kit? Let’s dive in!
What I Was Looking For in a Kit?

Whenever I watched makeup tutorials, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of products and the time-consuming routines. As part of the “Non-Makeup Girly” club, I was always intimidated by the skill it seemed to take just to apply makeup without looking… well, odd. So I just never wore any growing up.
I wanted a kit that was budget-friendly for experimenting but still high enough quality to avoid breakouts or cakey finishes. To my surprise, most “makeup kits” I found were packed with 30+ products for full glam looks, costing well over $100 just to achieve a simple effect. I also wanted to be able to easily replace a product if I ran out, meaning that it needed to be sold locally as apposed to ordering online.
That’s why I built this kit, something that fits my low-effort, put-together lifestyle. Whether I’m running errands, heading to work, or dressing up for a night out, I wanted a simple, affordable routine that works for both without breaking the bank.
I’ve now been using this kit for well over a year and by choosing budget-friendly makeup, I can still achieve a polished look without sacrificing my savings goals. Because looking good shouldn’t mean breaking the bank!
What You Need in a Basic Makeup Kit

When building a beginner-friendly or non-makeup girly makeup kit, less is more! You only need a few essentials to create both a natural everyday look and a more polished, going-out style. All of the products below can be purchased at Target, Walmart, CVS or Amazon.
Here’s a breakdown of the must-have products that will give you the most versatility and value while staying within budget.
1. Sunscreen
Before applying any makeup, a lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen is key to protecting your skin from sun damage and premature aging. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that works well under makeup. Many tinted sunscreens can also double as a light foundation alternative, saving you money and an extra step!
2. Concealer
A good concealer helps brighten under-eye circles, cover blemishes, and even out skin tone without needing a full foundation routine. Look for a lightweight, blendable formula that matches your skin tone or is one shade lighter for brightening under the eyes.
I am notorious for having dark circles under the eyes (Blame the STEM student mindset of never sleeping), Concealer is the one thing in my routine I don’t skip. Sometimes, I’ll even just wear concealer and finishing powder and skip the rest for a complete natural look!
3. Foundation or Tinted Moisturizer
For a seamless base, choose between a foundation for more coverage or a tinted moisturizer/BB cream (my personal favorite)for a lighter, more natural finish that literally feels like you’re wearing nothing. This step in your routine depending the day can be optional. Sometimes if I’m just running errands, I’ll just skip this all together.
Make sure to select a formula that works with your skin tone, typically people will choose matte for oily skin, hydrating for dry skin.
4. Setting Powder
A translucent setting powder helps control shine and keeps your makeup in place throughout the day. If you prefer a more natural look, a pressed powder with light coverage can also work instead of foundation.
I used to think that a clear powder was… pointless? Now it’s an essential that lives with my concealer. This keeps your concealer from looking glossy and actually look natural on your face without being to bright. If you decide to only wear concealer, this is a staple to add!
5. Blush
Adding a touch of color to your face can make a huge difference for a healthy skin effect! Choose a blush for a fresh, rosy glow or a bronzer for warmth and subtle contouring. I actually use a color from my eye shadow palette to act as a bronzer and save money!
6. Eyeshadow (Neutral Tones)
A small, budget friendly palette with neutral matte and shimmer shades can help you create both a soft daytime look and a more defined evening look. Stick to taupes, browns, or soft pinks for versatility.
7. Mascara
Mascara instantly makes your eyes look more awake and defined. A lengthening or volumizing drugstore mascara is an affordable way to enhance your lashes without needing eyeliner or eyeshadow. This is a staple for when I’m doing a more elevated look.
8. Eyeliner
Eyeliner can instantly enhance your eyes, whether you prefer a subtle look or a more dramatic effect. A brown pencil liner is great for beginners since it’s easier to blend and fix mistakes compared to liquid liner. The brown is also a more subtle effect then a straight black wing.
9. Lipstick or Tinted Lip Balm
A lip product ties everything together! A tinted lip balm is great for a soft, effortless look, while a lipstick or gloss adds more color for a bolder effect. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone for a natural or elevated look depending how bright or layered you go.
10. Makeup Remover
Another essential for being able to clean the makeup off of your face at the end of the day to prevent clogged pores and protect your skin. I typically just use Micellar Cleansing Water which you can find basically anywhere.

How to Keep It Under $50

Building a basic makeup kit on a budget doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality or versatility. With a few smart shopping strategies, you can easily create an effective, affordable makeup kit for under $50. Here’s how to keep it cost-effective without compromising on the essentials:
- Focus on Essentials
- Start with the basic products you’ll use daily to keep your routine simple. You don’t need every trendy product on the market. By sticking to the core items, you’ll save money while still covering all the bases. Many of these essentials come in budget-friendly options under $10, making it easy to build a complete kit for less than $50!
- Shop Drugstore Brands
- You don’t need high-end brands to get great makeup. Many drugstore brands like Maybelline, NYX, and e.l.f. offer high-quality, affordable products that get the job done just as well as pricier alternatives. Focus on tried-and-true formulas that are known for performance and value.
- Multi-Use Products Are Your Friend
- When you’re on a budget, multi-use products are a game-changer. A tinted moisturizer or BB Cream with SPF can replace both foundation and sunscreen, eyeshadow could be bronzer. These products are great for saving space in your makeup bag and money longterm!
- Take Advantage of Sales and Discounts
- Makeup is often on sale, and discounts can help stretch your budget even further. Watch for seasonal sales, store promotions, and coupons. Signing up for your favorite stores newsletters or loyalty programs can also alert you to exclusive deals and discounts on makeup.
- Avoid Trendy, Expensive Add-ons
- While it’s tempting to buy the latest makeup trend, focus on what you’ll actually use. Stick to essential, long-lasting products like a good concealer, mascara, and a neutral lip color. These staples will work for any occasion and are much more budget-friendly than constantly chasing trends.
- Don’t overspend on items you may not use often.
- Eyeshadow for example, if you’re used to a natural look keep your eyeshadow palettes cheap and small so if you only use it once in a while you don’t waste money if it goes bad.
How to Use These Products for Two Looks

With just a few simple adjustments, your basic makeup kit can take you from a fresh, everyday look to a polished, going-out look without needing extra products. Here’s how:
Everyday Natural Look (5-Minute Routine)
This look is all about enhancing your features with minimal effort.
- Prep Your Skin: Apply moisturizer and SPF to keep your skin hydrated and protected.
- Even Out Your Complexion: Dab concealer on any redness, blemishes, or under eye circles and blend with your fingers or a sponge. Then set it with setting powder to avoid the shiny under eye.
- Add a Natural Flush: Use a small amount of cream blush on your cheeks and blend upward for a healthy glow. Make sure to start out really light! You want to keep this as natural as possible.
- Soft & Hydrated Lips: Swipe on a tinted lip balm, gloss or sheer lipstick for a natural finish.
That’s literally it, quick and easy allowing you to get out the door and get your day started faster. As you get more comfortable with the different products, this process will also get even faster!
Elevated Look for Going Out (10-Minute Routine)
With just a few extra steps, you can take your look from casual to chic and polished for a night out.
- Follow Your Everyday Routine: Start with your natural look as the base.
- Boost Your Complexion: Apply a light layer of foundation or build up your concealer for more coverage.
- Enhance Your Eyes:
- Add eyeliner (brown for soft definition or black for bold drama).
- Apply a deeper eyeshadow shade to your crease for dimension.
- Curl your lashes and add an extra coat of mascara for volume.
- Sculpt & Glow: Lightly contour with bronzer and apply highlighter to the high points of your face (cheekbones, brow bones, and nose).
- Upgrade Your Lips: Swap your tinted balm for a bolder lipstick or gloss for extra shine.
Additional Tips For Beginners

Choosing the Right Shades
Picking the right shades for your skin tone is key to achieving a natural look. Here’s how to make the best choices:
- Foundation & Concealer: Look for a shade that matches your skin tone as closely as possible. Test on your jawline rather than your hand for the best match. If you’re unsure, opt for a lightweight formula like a tinted moisturizer that blends easily.
- Blush: Soft peach or pink tones work well for fair skin, while coral or berry shades flatter medium to deep skin tones. A sheer formula is more forgiving for beginners.
- Lip Colors: A good rule of thumb is to choose a “your-lips-but-better” shade for everyday wear something close to your natural lip color.
- Eyeshadows & Eyeliners: Neutral browns and taupes are beginner-friendly and flatter all eye colors. Black eyeliner gives a bold look, while brown is softer and more natural.
Tools vs Fingers What Do You Actually Need
As a beginner, you really don’t need a full set of expensive brushes. I have a cheap $5 set from amazon that I still use today. In fact, your fingers can be one of the best tools for blending certain products! Here’s what I find have been best practices for brushes, sponges, or your hands:
Foundation & Concealer: I find that I tend to use a combination of my finger and a brush, whenever I try to use a sponge I end up getting concealer or foundation in my eyelashes. Be sure to explore around and find what works best for you!
- Fingers: Great for blending lightweight liquids or creams for a natural finish. The warmth of your skin helps the product melt in.
- Sponge: Best for a smooth, airbrushed look, especially if using full-coverage foundation.
- Brush: Works well for precise application, but not necessary for beginners.
Blush & Bronzer: I use a powdered blush with a brush as it tends to be more forgiving and I can build it up depending the look I’m going for, but depending the blush you have, your fingers or a brush might work better.
- Fingers: Works well for cream blush, just dab and blend!
- Brush: Essential for powder blush or bronzer to avoid harsh lines. A fluffy brush is ideal for a soft, blended look.
Eyeshadow: I tend to prefer a brush as I have more control but honestly your fingers or a brush works well depending the look you’re going for.
- Fingers: Perfect for shimmer or cream shadows, just tap onto the lid.
- Brush: Helps with blending matte shades and adding definition in the crease.
Final Tips
- Makeup expires! Be mindful of product shelf life to avoid skin irritation and keep your kit fresh. Mascara should be replaced every 3 months, while powders and lip products last much longer.
- Take good care of your skin! A good makeup routine starts with healthy skin. Cleanse, moisturize, and use SPF daily to create a smooth base for your makeup. Use Micellar Water to remove makeup at the end of the day, never sleep in your makeup.
- You don’t need to master a full-face routine right away! Begin with basic essentials like concealer, mascara, and lip balm, then gradually add more products as you get comfortable.
- Make sure to apply your makeup with even, bright lighting! I tend to do my makeup in either a white light room or near a window with a small mirror. This gives best results when learning how much makeup to apply to make sure you don’t put too much.
Makeup is all about trial and error. Don’t be afraid to try new techniques and adjust based on what works best for your face shape and skin type. YouTube tutorials can be a great resource! I’ll post two of my favorites down below that helped me get started. Shout out to these two youtubers Nikki La Rose and Haley Kim, they are great at explaining everything from start to finish and are super easy to follow along!
