Feeling overwhelmed about your space and never having enough time or motivation can be a real struggle to getting organized. I’m going to show you my tried and true method on how to quickly declutter your home. This doesn’t have to be this giant daunting chore, Let’s get organized using the Empty, Evaluate and Edit (EEE) Method to achieve your perfect home that matches your lifestyle.

My Story

Before I discovered this method, my bursts of motivation to organize always came at the worst times. I’d tear through my entire home, only to be overwhelmed and pressed for time so much that I’d end up shoving everything back into random corners. My drawers turned into chaotic puzzles, I’d open one up only to spend precious minutes shifting and shuffling items around desperately trying to find something. On busy mornings, I was constantly scrambling for essentials, which only added to the stress.

That’s when I realized I needed a sustainable, step-by-step approach. I created the “Empty, Evaluate, Edit” method a simple checklist system where I focus on just a couple of spots each day which add up quickly. I empty everything out, evaluate what I truly use, and only put back what fits purposefully into my life. In less than a week, I noticed a dramatic shift: my space felt lighter, more organized, and I was finally in control.

Now, let’s dive into how this method works and how to quickly declutter your home and transform your lifestyle.

Getting Started: Visualizing the Decluttered lifestyle

Clean Room

For your first step I highly recommend checking out my “How to Create A Vision Board That Turns Your Dreams Into a Reality

This will give you some inspo on how to visualize or write down your ideal lifestyle. You may be wondering, “What the heck does this have to do with cleaning”? Studies show that you are far more likely to complete a task if you are motivated to an end product. Cleaning with intention and a dream lifestyle mindset will help you stay motivated throughout your decluttering process.

Quickly Declutter Your Home!

Method to Decluttering your home quickly

The EEE Method is a decluttering process that avoids burnout while keeping motivation by splitting the work into designated sections. Then tackling those sections over the course of a few days depending the size of the project. Here’s how it works.

Step 1: List Every Storage Space in Your Home

When I say list everything, I do mean EVERYTHING. Start by listing the rooms in your house, then every space within each room that you can store items. This will help you identify quickly how to declutter your home and where the problem areas are. Here are some examples on what different spaces may look like in that checklist:

Bedroom

  • Bedside table – Drawer 1
  • Bedside table – Drawer 2
  • Dresser – Counter Top
  • Dresser – Drawer 1
  • Dresser – Drawer 2
  • Basket
  • Bedroom Shelf

Closet

  • Shelf 1
  • Shelf 2
  • Hanging section 1
  • Box 1
  • Box 2
  • Box 3
  • Shoe Rack
  • Dresses

After you have created your list, you can either turn it into a checklist or just simple cross out the section when your done. Now your ready for the next step!

Step 2: Empty
  1. Pick two spots from your list (if they’re smaller spaces sometimes I’ll pick 3).
  2. Completely empty them out somewhere where you can see everything in one glance.
Step 3: Evaluate

Now that you can see everything put back anything you actually use on a regular basis or makes sense for the lifestyle you want. Leave everything else out on the floor or counter.

If it’s an item you use regularly and it’s broken, get rid of it and make a note to buy it again. (If you forget, you probably didn’t reach for the item as much as you thought).

Step 4: Edit

Now it’s time to edit the items that are left out on the counter. Every item you must do one of the following.

  • If it’s Broken: Throw it away!
  • If the item is still in good condition regift, donate or sell it
  • Any lingering items: Get rid of them!

If it’s not being used in your lifestyle and taking up space, why keep it? You’ve already put back what you use on a regular basis and what brings you joy. All that is left is clutter that can lead to a stressful mindset.

The EEE Method is an easy and simple way to take control of your life one checked box at a time. You can speed up the process by taking more sections each day, or slow it down and take x amount of sections per day.

By utilizing the space with items you actively use, it helps you be more intentional with things that bring you joy and goals you hope to achieve. No more fiddling around in drawers and running around looking for your keys.

Congratulations! You’ve officially taken the step to quickly declutter your home.

Tackling the Closet

Okay I don’t know about you but this is one of the biggest spots I procrastinate. But here are two methods to make it more manageable.

Start by going through all accessories, belts, shoes, hats and anything other then the actually clothes. This will help you build momentum as you get ready to tackle the larger parts.

There are two ways I like to tackle clothes

  1. You’ve probably heard about this before, but turning all your hangers backwards and as you wear something, wash it and hang it back up, you can turn the hanger forwards. This helps you see what you actually use can be an easy way to figure out what pieces must go.
  2. You can do a try-on by category, (this is my preferred method). Break your closet up into shirts, black tops, pants, jeans, dresses, skirts (whatever makes the most sense for your closet) and try on one section a day to determine what in that category stays and what goes.

Additional Clothes Decluttering Tips

If there’s anything in your closet that when you go to reach for it you say “I don’t want to wear it cause it’s not comfortable, doesn’t fit right or rides up” Get rid of it! Chances are, your reaching for other clothes more frequently.

Another Mindset I like is if I’m planning on donating or taking clothing to Plato’s Closet (a store that buys used clothes) these clothes can actually benefit someone who might need them. I’d rather it go to someone that can use it then rot in the back of my closet collecting dust.

If you get rid of clothes you don’t like, it leaves space for clothes that you do!

Tenant Mindset: If you are renting or a homeowner, you are paying for the space that a piece of clothing is taking up. Is it worth the $1 a day of sqft it takes up?

Use the 1 in and 1 out method when buying clothes. If you buy a new clothing item, make sure to remove one to help upkeep a decluttered household.

How to Stay Consistent & Motivated to tackle the Clutter in your Home

Remember that by gradually de-cluttering, you will be able to achieve a cleaner space, sustainable habits and less stress overall! Here are some tips to achieve that mindset:

  • Recommend tracking progress with a checklist or journal.
  • Setting Reminders or making it part of a daily routine can help you achieve your goals faster.
  • The tenant mindset: if you are renting or a homeowner, remember you are paying for the space that an item is taking up in your home. Is it worth the $1.99 a day of sqft it takes up? No? Then why is it here?
  • Do not take on more then a few sections of your checklist a day. This can cause burnout!
  • Set up a vision board or list of your dream lifestyle! This will help you visualize and stay motivated.
  • UPKEEP your mindset. When you are out thinking of purchasing a new item, think of where you’re going to put that new item in your space. Is there a place for it? Is it something you’ll actually use? Don’t bring unnecessary clutter back.
