The 2-Minute Rule is a secret powerful strategy that I use in my everyday life to stop procrastination.

Okay so maybe it’s not so secret nor is it a super power… But it does work! and now, you’ll know exactly how to use this rule to get more done and waste less time!

What is the 2-Minute Rule?

This “2-Minute Rule” is simple. If it takes less than 2 minutes to do, do it immediately instead of opting to do it later.

This concept was originally coined by productivity expert David Allen who wrote the book “Getting Things Done” (GTD).

It builds on the fact that small tasks add up over time. Overall giving yourself more time back in the long run to do other things in your life.

Why Does this work?

There are many benefits to using the “2-Minute Rule”. Not only does it allow you to complete one task faster. It also has other lasting benefits too.

  • Eliminates mental clutter: Small tasks take up space in your brain when left unfinished. Clearing mental clutter overall can help leave space for achieving goals.
  • Builds momentum: Quick wins make it easier to tackle bigger tasks. Building momentum allows you to continue your day to day tasks and often finish much quicker.
  • Overcomes the hardest part—starting: Getting started is often the biggest hurdle in productivity. Procrastination can kill momentum and keep you from achieving goals and day to day tasks.
  • Prevents task pile-up: Avoids the stress of dealing with multiple small, unfinished tasks later. Why spend an hour doing a bunch of small tasks when you can spend 2 minutes doing it now?

How to Apply the 2-Minute Rule in Daily Life

Here are some real life examples that I use the 2-minute rule in my daily life.

  • Replying to a short email or text
  • Washing a dish instead of leaving it in the sink
  • Hanging up a jacket instead of tossing it on a chair
  • Making your bed in the morning
  • Deleting unnecessary emails or files
  • Writing down a to-do list for the next day

If you catch yourself saying the pesky words “I’ll do this later”… That’s the perfect opportunity to apply the 2 minute rule.

What if a Task Takes More Than 2 Minutes?

Bigger tasks can obviously take more than 2 minutes to complete. If that’s the case it can be easy to file it away for later instead of applying the “2-minute rule”.

If that’s the case that, than it’s the perfect opportunity to modify the “2-Minute Rule”. Try this instead!

Modify the rule for bigger tasks: If it takes longer than 2 minutes, just start it for 2 minutes.

  • Example 1: Instead of dreading a 30-minute workout, commit to just 2 minutes—often, you’ll keep going!
  • Example 2: Break large tasks into smaller ones: If you need to organize your closet, start by folding just one pile of clothes.

Additional Tips to Stop Procrastination

The “2-minute rule” isn’t the only way to tackle procrastination.

There are plenty of other methods out too. Be sure to mix and match to change things up every so often and keep yourself engaged!

Some other methods could be:

  • Use the 5-Minute Rule for slightly bigger tasks.
  • Try the Pomodoro Technique (work in 25-minute sprints).
  • Keep a “Done List” to track completed tasks for motivation.
  • Limit distractions—put your phone in another room when focusing.
